Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, Pisa
Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, Pisa β The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo (Museum of the Works of the Cathedral) in Pisa houses the artistic treasures and original artworks from the monuments of the Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles), including the Cathedral, Baptistery, Leaning Tower, and Camposanto. Located in the former chapter house and cloisters on the south side of the cathedral, the museum displays sculptures, paintings, and architectural fragments spanning from medieval to modern times. The collection includes important works by Giovanni Pisano, Tino di Camaino, and other masters of Pisan and Tuscan art. Among the museum’s treasures are Giovanni Pisano’s original sculptures from the cathedral facade (replaced by copies on the building), Islamic artifacts acquired during Pisa’s maritime dominance, cathedral silverwork and liturgical objects, and paintings from various periods. The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo is particularly celebrated for Giovanni Pisano’s dynamic Gothic sculptures from the cathedral facade (late 13th-early 14th century), including Madonna and Child and prophets; Islamic bronzes and artifacts including the famous Pisa Griffin; and its comprehensive documentation of the artistic and architectural evolution of the Piazza dei Miracoli complex.
