Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, Orvieto β The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo (also known as Museo dell’Opera del Duomo di Orvieto or MODO) is located in the Palazzi Papali (Papal Palaces) adjacent to Orvieto Cathedral and houses artworks and treasures from the cathedral and other churches in Orvieto. Founded to preserve and display the artistic heritage of the cathedral, the museum contains important sculptures, paintings, and liturgical objects spanning from the medieval period through the Renaissance and Baroque eras. The collection includes works by artists who contributed to the cathedral’s decoration, sculptures removed from the facade for preservation, and the cathedral treasury with precious reliquaries and goldwork. Among the highlights are sculptures by Arnolfo di Cambio, paintings by Simone Martini, Coppo di Marcovaldo, and other masters of the Tuscan and Umbrian schools, as well as architectural fragments and models documenting the cathedral’s construction. The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo is particularly celebrated for its collection of sculptures by Arnolfo di Cambio and other Gothic masters; Simone Martini’s polyptych and other Sienese school paintings; and its important collection of liturgical objects and reliquaries related to the Miracle of Bolsena, which prompted the cathedral’s construction.
