Inaugurated in 1869, the museum houses an extensive collection of paintings, sculptures, and drawings from the 16th to 19th centuries, with a particular emphasis on French, Italian, and Flemish schools. The collection includes significant works by artists such as Rubens, Carracci, Perugino, Guercino, David, Ingres, Courbet, Corot, and Daumier. The museum is also known for its important holdings of Provençal painters and sculptures from the French school. The Palais Longchamp itself, with its monumental fountains and colonnades, is considered one of the architectural landmarks of Marseille.
