Duomo di Pistoia

Duomo di Pistoia – The Duomo di Pistoia, officially the Cattedrale di San Zeno (Cathedral of Saint Zeno), is the main religious edifice of Pistoia, Tuscany, located in the heart of the medieval city center on Piazza del Duomo. Originally founded in the 5th century and dedicated to San Zeno, Bishop of Verona, the cathedral was substantially rebuilt in Romanesque style in the 12th and 13th centuries, with later Gothic and Renaissance additions. The cathedral houses one of the masterpieces of Italian medieval goldsmithing, the silver altar of St. James (Altare di San Jacopo), begun in 1287 and completed over nearly two centuries by numerous masters including Brunelleschi. The interior features important works by Andrea della Robbia, Verrocchio, and other Tuscan masters. The cathedral is particularly renowned for its Romanesque facade with three tiers of loggias, its elegant bell tower (campanile), and the Chapel of St. James (Cappella di San Jacopo) which contains the magnificent silver altar, considered one of the finest examples of medieval goldwork in existence.
