Duomo di Orvieto

Duomo di Orvieto – The Duomo di Orvieto, officially the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo (Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption), is one of the greatest masterpieces of Italian Gothic architecture and one of Italy’s most magnificent cathedrals. Built between 1290 and the 17th century, the cathedral is celebrated for its spectacular polychrome marble facade adorned with golden mosaics, intricate sculptures, and bas-reliefs designed by Lorenzo Maitani and others. The interior houses extraordinary Renaissance frescoes including Luca Signorelli’s masterpiece cycle of the Last Judgment in the Cappella di San Brizio (Chapel of San Brizio), considered one of the greatest fresco cycles of the Italian Renaissance and a major influence on Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel. The cathedral also features the Corporale Chapel with frescoes by Ugolino di Prete Ilario depicting the Miracle of Bolsena, stained glass windows by Giovanni di Bonino, and numerous sculptures and artworks. The cathedral was built to house the miraculous relic of the Corporal of Bolsena and remains one of Umbria’s most important pilgrimage sites and artistic treasures.
