Duomo di Oristano

Duomo di Oristano – The Duomo di Oristano, officially the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta (Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption), is the principal church of Oristano, Sardinia, and the seat of the Archbishop of Oristano. Originally built in the 13th century in Romanesque-Gothic style, the cathedral underwent numerous transformations over the centuries, with major Baroque renovations in the 18th century that gave it much of its current appearance. The cathedral features a distinctive octagonal dome designed by Sardinian architect Domenico Spotorno and an elegant Neoclassical facade. The interior, rebuilt in the 18th century by Giovanni Battista Arieti, contains important works of Sardinian religious art including wooden sculptures, paintings, and the Chapel of the Rimedio with a venerated Madonna statue. The cathedral is particularly notable for its synthesis of architectural styles spanning several centuries, from medieval foundations through Baroque transformation to Neoclassical facade, representing the layered history of Sardinian ecclesiastical architecture. The Duomo serves as an important center of religious life in Oristano and houses significant examples of Sardinian Baroque art.
