Duomo di Modena

Duomo di Modena – The Duomo di Modena, officially the Cattedrale Metropolitana di Santa Maria Assunta e San Geminiano (Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption and Saint Geminianus), is one of the supreme masterpieces of Romanesque architecture in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built between 1099 and 1184 under the direction of the architect Lanfranco, with sculptural decoration by the master sculptor Wiligelmo, the cathedral represents a pinnacle of medieval art and architecture. The facade and interior are adorned with extraordinary Romanesque sculptures by Wiligelmo depicting scenes from Genesis and the life of San Geminiano, Modena’s patron saint. The cathedral is accompanied by the soaring Ghirlandina bell tower, also part of the UNESCO designation. The interior houses important works including medieval sculptures, the crypt with the tomb of Saint Geminianus, and later additions by Emilian artists. The Duomo di Modena is particularly celebrated for Wiligelmo’s facade reliefs (including the famous Genesis cycle, 1099-1106), considered among the greatest achievements of Romanesque sculpture; the harmonious integration of architecture and sculpture by Lanfranco and Wiligelmo; and its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside the Ghirlandina tower and Piazza Grande.
