Duomo di Castelfranco Veneto
Duomo di Castelfranco Veneto β The Duomo di Castelfranco Veneto, officially the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta e San Liberale (Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption and Saint Liberalis), is the principal church of Castelfranco Veneto in the Veneto region of northern Italy. Originally built in the 18th century in Neoclassical style by Francesco Maria Preti, the cathedral stands on the site of earlier medieval churches. The cathedral is world-renowned for housing one of the masterpieces of the Venetian Renaissance: Giorgione’s Castelfranco Madonna (Madonna and Child with Saints Francis and Liberalis), also known as the Pala di Castelfranco, painted around 1504 for the Costanzo Chapel. This altarpiece, created by Giorgione in his hometown, is considered one of the artist’s most important and best-preserved works, notable for its innovative composition, atmospheric sfumato technique, and poetic landscape background. The painting represents a revolutionary moment in Venetian art and remains one of the most significant treasures of Renaissance painting in the Veneto region.
