Musée des Beaux-Arts de Chartres
Musée des Beaux-Arts de Chartres – The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Chartres is housed in the former episcopal palace (Palais Épiscopal) directly adjacent to the world-famous Chartres Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in 1833, the museum occupies a historic building with parts dating from the 15th to 18th centuries, featuring elegant Renaissance and classical architecture. The collection encompasses European art from the 16th to 20th centuries, with particular strength in French painting and decorative arts. The museum features significant works by Zurbarán, Champaigne, Chardin, Fragonard, Vlaminck, and Soutine. The museum is particularly renowned for its exceptional collection of 18th-century French harpsichords (one of the finest in the world), its important holdings of enamel work from Limoges, and its remarkable series of paintings depicting the Chartres Cathedral and surrounding landscape by various artists. The museum’s location next to the Gothic masterpiece creates a unique dialogue between medieval and fine arts.
