Musée des Beaux-Arts de Caen
Musée des Beaux-Arts de Caen – The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Caen is one of the most important museums in Normandy, located within the historic walls of the Château de Caen, a medieval fortress built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century. Founded in 1801, the museum houses an exceptional collection of European painting and sculpture from the 15th to 21st centuries. The collection features masterpieces by Perugino, Veronese, Tintoretto, Poussin, Rubens, Van Dyck, Boucher, Géricault, Courbet, Monet, and Bonnard. The museum is particularly renowned for its outstanding holdings of 17th-century French and Italian painting, its important collection of 19th-century Romantic and Realist art, and its significant works by Norman artists. The museum’s location within the medieval castle ramparts, combined with its modern exhibition spaces designed by architect Jean-Pierre Jouve, creates a unique dialogue between historic and contemporary architecture.
