SAENREDAM, Pieter Jansz: Interior of the Choir of Sint-Bavokerk at Haarlem

🖼 Interior of the Choir of Sint-Bavokerk at Haarlem, -
Pen and black chalk on paper
Weimar, Germany

Pieter Jansz Saenredam was a pioneering master of church interiors, using precise architectural drawings and mathematical perspective to transform sacred spaces into luminous, almost spiritual compositions. His meticulous depictions of Dutch Protestant churches—stripped of Catholic ornament following the Reformation—capture both the austere beauty of these reformed spaces and the subtle play of light through their vast interiors. The Sint-Bavokerk in Haarlem, one of the Netherlands' most important medieval churches, became a favored subject for Saenredam, who returned to document its soaring columns and intricate vaulting multiple times throughout his career.
